Las Madres

The Las Madres Vineyard is an exquisite 13-acre vineyard in the Carneros region of Sonoma County. Las Madres is most well known for its Pinot Noir grape production which flourishes due to the cooling fogs rolling off of San Pablo Bay that produce a unique microclimate favorable to the grapes.

Carneros also produces some of the most complex and delicious Syrah fruit available. The cooler autumn temperatures combined with the bay fog creates a slower ripening, leading to a longer ‘hang’ time that produces grapes with incredible complexity, balance and lushness.

Las Madres, farmed by John and Jean Painter, is two different vineyards, each named for one of their mothers (hence the name, Las Madres). The vineyards are meticulously managed for optimum nutrient balance, as the Painters artfully plant a variety of cover crops in the dormant winter months to replenish the soil at springtime.

The more intimate size of the Las Madres vineyard allows the Painters to personally attend to the fine details of yield, cluster development and crop cover control, ensuring ideal sunlight to bring about the most delicious fruit. At harvest time, the Painters monitor the ripening of the fruit and harvest the grapes several times to ensure even fruit quality going into crush.
